I used the "Three-part" sphere pattern from this site: [link]
Though I modified it a little bit; I cut the pieces so that the pointed tips are rounded, so the pieces now look more like ovals than footballs. (Because if you follow that pattern exactly as it is, you will not get a sphere. Kinda annoying, but you'll be able to figure it out. If I'm being a bit unclear, let me know and I can draw the modified pattern for you.
